Charles Darwin's Granddaughters series
Sala Lieber's new series of paintings, "Charles Darwin's Granddaughters," transports the viewer to an adventurous world full of fascinating creatures and exciting stories. The imaginary daughters of the famous naturalist Charles Darwin rummage through the professor's study.
The painting "We'll Take This With Us" depicts the childlike, playful interaction with the exhibited objects. The artist draws inspiration for her work both from her own life as a mother of two sons (aged two and six) and from her imagination. The painting "Tiffany" shows Darwin's imaginary granddaughters in a jewelry store. Upon closer inspection, however, it becomes clear that no jewelry is on display, but rather beetles and butterflies. In this painting, the artist plays with surreal elements, illustrating that nature itself is the greatest creator and designer – and that artists are constantly inspired by nature and its creatures.
Sala Lieber's aim is to create a new visual world, one that draws on and evolves from the Baroque period. This visual world is intended to generate an entirely new language and atmosphere – yet it feels familiar. The artist expresses her deep admiration for this opulent and wonderful era by consistently employing Baroque elements and figures with great respect.
