Newspaper article in the Süddeutsche Zeitung ...

In the Süddeutsche Zeitung on Friday, April 12, 2024, a nice article appeared mentioning Sala Lieber's bar scenes by the author Simone Buchholz.

Abstract:

“(…)Yes, I really like Hopper’s paintings; I’m one of the Nighthawks from the famous picture myself. But recently Edward Hopper has some competition. I’ve discovered a contemporary artist who paints captivating bar scenes, full of light, life, and color. What’s fascinating about these darkly luminous paintings—watch out!—of naked, mermaid-like barmaids with glowing red updos, which they wear as if they were crowns, is the dignity of the people working there. Customers don’t appear; they simply don’t matter. The paintings don’t depict the moment just before the bar opens; on the contrary, the night seems to be already in full swing, but it belongs entirely to those who take care of the drinks, sometimes together with a second barmaid or a modestly dressed barman. They are all self-sufficient. My favorite painting by Sala Lieber is Zoe (2021), which shows the stunning backside of a naked barmaid in front of a packed bar.” A shelf of colorful bottles and glittering glasses, and her gaze from the picture says: "You'd like to be here, wouldn't you? But this is my place." One night, I'd still like to quietly knock on the door, hoping Zoe will let her former colleague in.
