Dancing in the Dark. The dark side of dancing.

Featuring illustrations of works by Sala Lieber.

Dance is the embodiment of inspiration in movement, and humankind has always expressed itself through dance. It is usually seen as an expression of life and joy, of health and fitness, but there is also a darker side to dance: erotic and sensual, like the tango; spiritual, like the war dance; or as part of drugs and intoxication, like the witches' dance on Walpurgis Night. The absolute diametrical opposite of being alive is, finally, the dance of skeletons, the dance of death in literature and especially in the visual arts, as found in such abundance and diversity in the graphic arts collection "Man and Death" at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, which serves not only as the starting point but also as the endpoint of this book project.
